I just started working for an organization that uses Salesforce as its membership management system.  It appears to have a lot of flexibilty but since Salesforce is primary build for CRM, there is a lot of confguration/customization that needs to be done to make it meet the needs of membership management.  We just launched 6 months ago and are still figuring out the reporting system.  Its especially difficult to report on membership new vs. reinstatement vs. rejoin but this could be due to our configuration.  We also have not figured out how to automate billing and renewals.  I know that there are a few AMS providers out there that are built on the Salesforce platform and we are exploring them but I'm immediately turned off by the idea that we purchased this platform and then have to turn around and pay again for another platform.

Even with customizations from Salesforce Partners, we've had enormous challenges with deploying this across our organization.

We tried a single license of Salesforce after 3 licenses of Salesforce IQ was not meeting our needs (the conversion workflows from recruit to member did not exist and we were not able to cusomtize it for our needs). We were so excited to try Salesforce...and quickly realized we were out of our depth. As a four-employee small trade organization without prior experience with Salesforce, we realized that the system was capable of so much, but none of us had the time to truly master it. It wasn't as user-friendly / plug-and-play as other systems and hiring a consultant to get us set up was not feasible at the time. Eventually, we decided since we could only afford 1 license instead of 4, it was not the right system for the entire staff to utilize.

We started with Salesforce in 2007. We never had someone on staff who really knew what they were doing and the consultants we had in the early years didn't really know what we needed. That being said, Salesforce is certainly a robust CRM and it is wonderfully customizable if you know what you're doing. The issue for us is that we are a very small staff and we need a product that is more "out-of-the-box". We need simple membership management and a member portal. Email function would be great. We currently use Mailchimp because all of the reviews said it would integrate well with Salesforce. We have not found this to be true. The integration has been a nightmare. Mailchimp doesn't tell Salesforce that users have unsubscribed in a way that doesn't allow salesforce to push them right back over. Our list is a mess. We had to turn off the function to allow Mailchimp to push data to Salesforce about click rates, etc to the contact records because it caused us to go over API limits, so that functionality is useless. Events - we have had to customize this as well. We take in leads from our website and convert them into Salesforce opportunities attached to contact records. Not only does a staff person have to spend several minutes registering each person, but there is a lot of room for error with this. Duplicates are a big problem, as there is no authentication. We have to work with a web developer for every event to put it up on the web and make sure it's talking back to Salesforce. Occasionally, it just doesn't. The only way to know that is that we get emails for each credit card payment and one of us has to notice that it never came in to Salesforce. I'm sure that other organizations using Salesforce have set it up better than we have and it is working more smoothly for them. However, our instance is a pretty big mess. We've worked with several consultants over the years and none of them have been able to make it work more smoothly. They've suggested other apps - cvent, eventbrite, mailchimp, click and pledge, etc. We're ready to move away from cobbling all of these things together and work with a product that is already made for associations like ours.

We are a 2 person operation and are managing our membership in Excel spreadsheets. Whenever there is a change, I need to updates 5+ files. My idea was to combine everything into Salesforce. Having said that, its like putting a NASA engine in a Pinto (for those of you that are old enough to remember what a Pinto is). Yes, it's an engine and a car needs an engine.. but it doesn't need that complex of an engine. I am pushing through with it - and I think it could be great... but I am not there yet.

We are a smallish trade association and implemented Salesforce probably 4-5 years ago. The previous ED chose the system after looking at a few others. My feeling is that we do not use the system to its fullest and the reason is that it is just not user friendly. We do have it integrated fully with our website and listserv, which results in my having to 'touch' three different systems to get a member on board or to make changes. We're looking to change to another platform that integrates the website more cleanly

I inherited Salesforce when I came onboard as my org's only employee 6 months ago. Despite working with a consultant to assist in integrating our website, member dues, listserv, etc. with Salesforce we just don't use what capabilities are there and do not seem relevant to a membership organization. I still have to input data into other systems--it is not a one-stop shop/solution that it seemed that it could be. Is it just 'too powerful' and too complex for a 450 member (trade association)? Perhaps.

I've worked with Access and iMIS at past organizations, and they were horrible. 3 years ago, my organization switched to Salesforce, and it has changed our work environment. We have a on-staff developer who customized many fields within Salesforce, including business listings. We use ExactTarget for email marketing. We use EchoSign for electronic invoicing and tracking when someone opens and views a renewal invoice. We also use ShoreTel Sky phone integration to track calls from members and calls made (retention) to members. The task feature automates who is to complete tasks, when they need to be completed by and IF the task was completed, such as welcome packets, welcome emails, setting up listings or just following up on anything. Plus, it's web based, so my team can work from the road. Salesforce is amazing!!

We use Salesforce Professional Edition 14. I was not here for implementation so I can't speak to that. What I will say is that Salesforce is an excellent database but I find it very cumbersome to use. It is not intuitive nor does it lend itself to functioning as a true AMS system. We have had integration issues with the multiple solutions we 'hang' off it to make it function as we need and many of the APIs we use are not supported by the Salesforce or the vendor you are trying to integrate with. If you are looking for purely a database solution it is wonderful. If you want your events, committees, communications, website and back-office functions seamlessly integrated, this is not the best way to go.
