I'll caveat this review with the fact that it was never properly launched with our staff nearly 18 years ago. From day one, there were issues that could have been mitigated with proper training and actually configuring it to our needs. That said, later attempts to configure this system required outside sources. As well, any custom reports needed to be handled by outside sources which drove our expenses up and delayed tasks. We replaced iMIS with Salesforce to handle our backbone CRM and, as an example of how easy the transition was, we handled EVERYTHING from data migration to Salesforce customization in-house.

At both my current and last shops, we've iMIS. First experience with membership relationship software in the Association space. Prior, I've worked in nonprofit fundraising so I was familiar with biggies like Raiser's Edge and Team Approach as well as email/advo tools like GetActive and Convio. On one hand, iMIS just seems like it's too much product for a small association like ours. We ARE aspirational and often do create needs for it that need customization but the cost seems high for us. On the other hand, the most basic of all basic functions - the join process - is a mess out of the box. The user first much create an account. With no explanation when it's over that another step is needed. It's very transnational. I was able to get this customized at my last place but we had the resources. But the bigger knock against iMIS is that you can never really deal directly with them. Everybody has to work through a re-seller. Which is an added cost. Sometimes a big one. And if you need it to do something it doesn't do out of the box, you have to trust your re-seller is looking for pre-existing solutions (even if it's not made by them) instead of just charging you to make something from scratch.

A Flexible AMS

We are on iMIS version 15.2 and have been using the product for several years. We find the product to be quite robust and flexible to handle new business processes as needed. The product has limitations and is not the most intuitive but overall is efficient.

We are beginning to outgrow iMIS. It has been great up until now, but as we are looking to get more sophisticated we are evaluating if iMIS truly can meet our needs and keep up with us.

iMIS is a powerful database, but using it to its fullest capabilities can be a challenge. Without extensive training, it serves as an overly-expensive platform for mundane tasks. Customization can make it powerful, but they too are expensive and can be undone by upgrades. For associations with the resources and time to invest, iMIS can be the correct AMS.

We implemented iMIS 15 in 2012 and recently upgraded to iMiS 20, with iFinity (ASI partner). We have 9 users the system is integrated to the website and is used to drive all of our marketing and comms. We find the system to be user-friendly and powerful for most users. Beware - people will need a lot of training, so 'casual' use does not work, but if you have happy to invest, then it works really well. The website and finance integration are reliable and gives us what we need.

iMIS 20 isn't a bad AMS, especially compared to some of the horror stories I've heard. But it is clunky, is hard to customize, and can sometimes have glitches. However, it is much improved over 15.2, and maybe they're on the right track. The RiSE website platform would get most of my scorn. It is poorly structured and extremely difficult to work with once you pass an intermediate level of need.

When I joined our organization 2 years ago, we had been using iMIS for more than 8 years. We'd used iMIS 15 and 20. In my opinion, I've found that iMIS works ok if you have a straightforward membership management program with very little requirements for advanced features. I've used and implemented other association management systems before (the big ones, you know the names) and they are far superior to iMIS. iMIS appears to be the laggard of the bunch and certainly not progressive nor innovative. Reliable, yes! It works. Understanding the underlying data architecture... a challenge, even for our technical staff. There are many ways the product could be improved however, we are not going to wait to find out if it does. We are moving to a more modern, 100% cloud-based solution.

We implemented iMIS approximately 5 years ago. At current we use it to power multiple websites (AmericanHort.org/Cultivate17.org/HRIresearch.org), managing event speakers and volunteers, as well as basic membership functions such as payments, donations, etc. To give you a scope of our organization we are approximately 1,800 COMPANY members and 400 INDIVIDUAL members. We have several events per year mostly attended by 200 or less and then we have an very large annual conference of nearly 10,000. We just started running registration for the small events through iMIS and the setup has been challenging. iMIS has quaiks. For example. We have spend close to 10 hours of re-seller and staff time trying to figure out why "register more people" works in some browsers and not in others. This, along with other iMIS quirks, are often known by ASI (makers of iMIS) but not known by the re-seller. Therefore we end up paying the re-seller in support hours something that ASI already knows is broken and there's not a known fix for. Or if there is a fix it requires MORE support hours. iMIS truly is limitless in its capabilities. The unfortunate part is that for a small-ish association like ours (<20 staff) we do not have the internal resources to take full advantage of what iMIS can do. When we did have a staff member with 100% focus on iMIS our support bills were still significant from our reseller. Staff find it clunky and not at all intuitive to use. Webpages randomly stop functioning for no apparent reason, server response is slow despite paying for additional memory, and the transition from desktop-view to web-view is confusing at best. We'd like to automate some of our membership communications (welcome email, 30-day new member email, 6 month check-in email etc) but will need to purchase an additional module (Automation Plus) to make that happen. To the expense of ~$5,000 for the module and then additional support from our consultant or reseller to program what we need.

We have used iMIS for more than 10 years. When we initially installed it, we were using a customized MS Access database. This product was very expensive for what we were getting out of it. iMIS seemed like a leap forward at the time. We like the fact that iMIS RiSE is a much more integrated platform for handling meeting registrations and allowing customers to update their data. However, it is so complex many of the features we do not use because we don't have the internal bandwidth to make the customizations. Finding staff that are proficient in Crystal Reports has become an issue as well. There is a lot to like there, but unfortunately it is so complex you need to pay for expensive consult time to make even the most modest changes. I think we will pursue something a little more straightforward.

We've been on this system for at least a decade - reliability is its strong suit, but ultimately, we find ourselves using external databases for registration, abstract management, the foundation, the website...we would love to get on tool that's more user friendly. I'm positive iMIS would be a great tool if the investment to for the latest version and regular training was made.

iMIS is a nightmare. Its old interface is not user-friendly and I'm often encountering errors that require correction by our IT department. Does not connect with newer third-party platforms like MailChimp, which adds another restriction to our ability to communicate with members effectively. I also went through an entire membership directory update only to find out most of my work was automatically undone by the program because I missed a step that was not at all intuitive. Very, very frustrating.

We've been using iMIS for over 15 years now. iMIS 15 is pretty solid product and we like. It is not a perfect system for accounting purpose, but it is great for everything else and for creating custom application. We are in the process migrating to iMIS 20, which should be even better.

First the good - the system has a lot of features and functionality. It integrates well to outside programs such as Learn Something and GoToWebinar. iMIS15 has it's shortfalls with user experience - clunky to use and errors (a lot which are fixed upgraded versions). It is not very intuitive.

Purchase in a modular fashion to hold costs on initial purchase. The membership management is probably the strongest feature. If you need event management, social media engagement then iMIS 20.XX is not the most modern. We are a long time user, 20 years and the product is no longer as fresh as it once was. The product is undergoing a major refresh and is partially web based and partially desktop based. Cumbersome in that some setup is done in desktop and some is done browser based. New web based features are added in anticipated quarterly updates. However some features break in updates. Also there are many third-party products to address the short comings it becomes burdensome to ensure updates do not break any of the third-party products. The underlying MS SQL database management system provides lots of power in the form of stored procedures and views but the SSRS report writing tools are quite cumbersome and come with a steep learning curve. Crystal Reports may meet your needs better. The integrated IQA, Intelligent Query Architect product is limited and often buggy. Overall I do not believe this product has kept up with the times. Very powerful for membership management and demographics but constricting in event management functionality if your needs are broad based.

iMIS15 Misses the Mark by about 15 years!

iMIS 15 seemed to have been a state-of-the-art system 15 years ago but with today's advancements in user interface and overall usability and functionality, the platform is quite dated. I must admit we have not done any of the upgrades so a large part of the blame is on us but I was surprised to find such an old system! I am new to the association I am now Director of Membership for and I have been sincerely frustrated by how much 'manual' work I have to go through to gather information or search through the platform to find a specific information on a member. Dues collection invoicing and payment notices are hard to generate. Reports are not intuitive and are cumbersome to create and run. I would hope version 20 would be better (and I know it's at least cloud-based, which would in and of itself be a huge improvement) but with such minimal customer service, I am now shopping for a new system that is of this decade and within budget.

We've had IMIS for 16 years and have learned to tweak and work-around its limitations to get it to do what we need. The good part of iMIS is that it's just a SQL database and there are many ways to get the data out, including many 3rd party products and web services. The down side to iMIS is that for a large organization, sharing the desktop application with many departments, it gets too complex for users to use the long lists of queries and reports. Search is not as robust as we needed also. We learned to develop department-based front ends to run our queries and reports and that works pretty well for us for now. Our next step is to have something that is easier to implement integrated web front end solutions with our Ektron CMS.
